The adverse effects of the complete loss or the fragmentation of old-growth forests in structurally simplified production forests can be avoided through forest preservation and management. In his book ‘The hidden lives of trees’, Peter Wohlleben describes how trees should be seen as more than just a commodity and how selective logging and pruning, instead of cutting down the whole tree or entire forest patches, contributes to a species-appropriate manner of forest preservation (Wohlleben, 2016). Several other sustainable forest management practices are preventing pathogen spreading and limiting illness of trees, preventing forest fires, and protecting the forest from illegal logging. Preserving an already existing forest through sustainable forest management practices allows reaping the more substantial thermal buffering ability benefits that old-grown forests have compared to young-planted forests (Lin et al., 2020; Sheil, 2018; Elliston et al., 2017; Norris et al., 2011).
